Disaster Report 2013

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Shepherd's Hill International (SHI), thanks to the hundreds of people and dozens of churches throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia who have contributed to disaster relief and rebuilding in the Philippines following the devastation from the 7.2 earthquake and super typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). Millions of lives have been drastically impacted by these disasters almost beyond comprehension, but you are making a difference to thousands of lives.

At least a dozen church of Christ ministries are cooperating in this work. We don’t know the amount others have raised, but gifts to SHI for relief and recovery are approaching half a million dollars. Also, several containers of essential supplies have been delivered and distributed, and more are coming from the U.S., Singapore, and Malaysia. These ministries are targeting their efforts to make a difference in selected communities of great need.

SHI’s Executive Director, Salvador Cariaga, has been in the Philippines for several weeks helping to direct our efforts and to begin developing a strategy for the future of our livelihood and gospel ministries there. As you may know the eye of the typhoon passed right through Arapal Christian Camp and Livelihood Center, the center of SHI’s ministry efforts. Every structure at Arapal was destroyed or seriously damaged. Thankfully, the BandS building was partially constructed out of concrete and, though its roof was destroyed, it provided shelter to save dozens of lives in the storm. Dr. John Bailey of Body and Soul Ministries has pledged to repair and expand that building.

The partnering ministries recently decided it was time to focus most of our efforts on rebuilding and providing seeds and tools for future crops. Through the partnering ministries, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been effectively deployed to save lives and begin the process of rebuilding homes and infrastructure.

We are thankful for the generosity and spirit of Christ which have resulted in this outpouring of service to the poorest of the poor in the Philippines. The needs remain great and will be ongoing for years, so any additional gifts are most welcome and will be strategically deployed in the name of Jesus. We are grateful that there are churches and Christians who are continuing to prepare additional containers of relief supplies and who are raising more funds to assist.

Please be assured that every dollar contributed to SHI for disaster aid will be used for relief and rebuilding. SHI feels a sacred trust to exercise good stewardship over what you have entrusted to our care. Our years of work in this area of the Philippines enables us to deploy these resources most effectively and carefully.

If you have more questions about how you can help with these efforts, please feel free to email us at the Though we don’t want to detract significantly from his 24/7 efforts in the Philippines, if there is something you need to know from Salvador, he can be reached at

Additional contributions can be made through the website at or check payable to Shepherds Hill and mailed to PO Box 11000, Oklahoma City, OK 73136-1100.

With gratitude on behalf of God’s children in the Philippines,
SHI Board of Trustees
